    What to Expect from Our Suicide Prevention Hotline

    Suicide can be a difficult topic to talk about. However all of our Suicide Prevention Hotline counselors have been through extensive training to talk to you about your concerns in a sensitive manner. They won’t judge you or tell you what to do but instead will listen and try to help you process how you are feeling and brainstorm ways that might help you to feel better. The Suicide Prevention Hotline is a free and confidential telephone service that is open 24-hours a day. Counselors are available to talk about your thoughts of suicide or concerns about someone who may be suicidal.

    Is My Call Confidential?

    All calls to the Suicide Prevention Hotline are confidential and our counselors are trained on the importance of confidentiality. There may be some times when we are required by law to break confidentiality. This may occur if we learn that a child, elderly or otherwise disabled person is being abused. We may also break confidentiality in very rare circumstances, when we believe that someone’s life is in immediate danger. In the great majority of calls, even when a caller is suicidal, we do not break a caller’s confidentiality, but rather work collaboratively with them to make a plan to stay safe.

    Who Will I be Talking To?

    Our counselors are well-trained paraprofessionals, but they are not therapists and the service they provide is not a substitute for professional mental health care. Hotline calls are focused on the present, what is going on in the here and now. Counselors are not trained to do therapy or to explore issues from the past except to focus on how they are impacting what’s happening today. If you are interested in receiving counseling for on-going concerns, our hotline counselors can refer you to therapists in the community.
